2nd Annual Christmas Book Drive Success!

In the spirit of giving, the students at Our Lady of Lourdes proved once again their generosity! We were able to deliver over 1,100 gently used (most in new condition) books to the Raleigh Rescue Mission in downtown Raleigh. These books will be used as Christmas presents for homeless children and to supplement their in-house school library. From the bottom of Mrs. Finn's heart...thank you so much for helping to make this possible. You continue to make me very proud!

Enjoy the rest of your break and see you next year!

Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt

HOMECOMING by Cynthia Voigt

I thought this recent write-up was wonderful. If you have not read any of Cynthia Voigt's books...this book is an excellent place to begin.

On Behalf Of Richie Partington...
For those of you unfamiliar with it, HOMECOMING is the first book in a seven-book series by Cynthia Voigt. I was turned onto the book when I first went to work in the bookstore fifteen years ago. I happily consumed all seven books like there was no tomorrow. The second book in the series (which is in so many ways the second half of the initial story) was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1983, the third book was awarded a Newbery Honor, and the fourth book -- which really serves as a prequel to the series -- ranks right up there with THE WEDNESDAY WARS in its showing on an achingly personal level how the Vietnam War forever altered the underlying fabric of America.

HOMECOMING is the story of the four Tillerman kids (Dicey, James, Maybeth, and Sammy) from Cape Cod, whose poor and troubled mother packs them up in the car one morning with the intention of driving to her elderly aunt's house in Bridgeport, but then abandons the children in a mall parking lot just inside Connecticut. After a day of waiting for her return, it falls to thirteen year-old Dicey -- who fears that talking with authorities might result in their being separated from one another -- to keep them alive and lead them by foot to Great Aunt Cilla's house in Bridgeport. When things don't work out there as hoped -- to say the least -- Dicey must then lead them further on, to the very place where they might well be able to learn how her mother became who she is.

HOMECOMING is an extraordinary read because it is a survival story in which we come to know so much of the inner workings of each of these four children who are four real individuals. There are potential dangers to be faced that are personified in the various adult characters the siblings meet, and the story is groundbreaking in its subtle explorations of what drives these adult characters. In addition, Voigt time and again provides exceptionally intimate descriptions of the places -- the beaches, the roads, the houses, the small cities -- that the children experience while on their quest for a home.

"If you took home to mean where you rested content and never wanted to go anywhere else, then Dicey had never had a home. The ocean always made her restless; so even Provincetown, even their own remembered kitchen, wasn't home. That was why Dicey always ran along the sand beside the ocean, as if
she had to race the waves. The ocean wasn't home, then, and neither was anyplace else."

Captainesque weighs in on Clay

Recently asked by Mrs. Finn to read the book Clay (David Almond, 2006), I was tasked on the age appropriate question and readability. This blog offering captures my thoughts accordingly. A recommended age level is provided in closing.

As a whole, it is a provoking book that made me assess my scenario at home with teenagers. Initially, it took some getting used to as it is written with British style- both comedic and manner. Once I adjusted after some occasional re-reading of sections to better understand the content and flow, I settled in. Again, my parenting role surfaced. I believe this book is suited for 13 – 15 year old readers depending on individual circumstances and maturity. Another way to look at it, a possible read for selected 8th graders (e.g. Reader’s Club), post graduation summer reading lists before 9th grade or 9th graders. As a genre, having overcome the initial matters of style, I was reminded of a “lower end” Catcher in the Rye (J. D. Salinger, c. 1951) and, albeit to a lesser extent, Ordinary People (John Vogel, c. 1980). What can I say, just call me an experienced reader!

A humble suggestion: Parents may take stock of the exposure their children have had to potential or actual dramas, peer conflicts (including bullying) and misbehavior through deception before sharing the book (with kids). To be more direct, there’s distinct adolescent behavior that crosses boundaries. Teenage characters in Clay are in a structured environment generally, as seen through school, family and church settings, however, the featured characters fight, steal, lie, etc. The term “troubled youth” may be a stretch with one exception, but the casual nature discerned through the read could infer such questionable activities of youth as acceptable without consequence. Moreover, on a much broader note, the debate of good versus evil and the depth of Clay’s origin may initiate questions.

As a whole, reading the book may generate questions and potential debate of a worthwhile nature. Is Davie “wrong” for some of his activities (e.g. lying to a priest)? Is Davie’s involvement at Crazy Mary’s house without any merit? How do you assess the Priest’s role in the book in terms of strengths and weaknesses? Is the central character, Davie, a “bad kid?” Captainesque’s bottom line: Keep the audience targeted to mature readers in the 13 – 15 year old range to answer those questions!

roll of thunder hear my cry

roll of thunder hear my cry is a good book, its sad but a good book!

The House of Djinn

The House of Djinn by Suzanne Fisher Staples is the third in a series by this author. I did take me awhile to get into this book because I have not read the first two books. The book is set in California and in Pakistan. The contrast between the two cultures is very evident. Jameel lives in California and every summer visits his grandfather, a tribal chief, in Pakistan. There are many characters to keep track of, but the climax is worth the work. I felt like the author set the stage for a fourth book at the end. I give this novel 3 stars.

Waiting For Normal

Waiting For Normal by Leslie Connor is about a heroine that is amazingly strong and resourceful. Addie's mother is an all or nothing kind of person and her step father lives in another city. All Addie wants is a normal life. She finds many ways to achieve normal by forming friendships, playing the flute and taking care of her pet hamster This story will make you appreciate your family and the "normal" life you enjoy. I give this novel 5 stars!

zebra lover says that roll of thunder hear my cry is a really sad book and happy book at the same time!!!!

Butterfly Wing shares her fairytale...

The Big Bad Chicken by Butterfly Wing
There were three little foxes, clever of course, that decided to make a house.  I'm going to make a treehouse house, said fox number one.  I'm going to make a house made out of metal, said fox number two.  Well I'm going to find a nice person to live with, said fox number three.  Good luck with that, snorted fox number one.  So fox number one found some wood and nails and started building.  While fox number two found a vacant swing set and started re-arranging it.  Fox number three couldn't find anyone, so instead fox number three decided to settle under a tree.  Finally fox number one and two finished their houses.  Suddenly a huge, angry chicken came along.  Uggggh, he groaned.
He saw fox number one in the treehouse window.  Fox number one saw how much bigger the chicken was than him.  Let me in, shouted chicken.  Eeeeeeeeep, squealed fox number one.  Chicken started to climb the treehouse ladder.  This is my house now, he shouted.  Fox number one jumped out the window and ran to fox number two's house.  This is too small, groaned the chicken.  Chicken saw two foxes in a metal house window.  Chicken started to bang on the door.  Eeeeeeep , cried the foxes.  The chicken was about to break the door when he shouted, this is my house now!  The foxes jumped out the window and ran to fox number three.  This house makes me too hot, he said as he took a big breath.  Suddenly, as he walked out the door, he saw three foxes under a tree.  Chicken started to walk towards the three foxes and shouted, this is my tree now!  Two foxes shrieked and yelled RUUUUUN!  No!! shouted fox number three as he charged at the chicken.   What are you doing? asked chicken nervously.  Fox number three didn't answer.  The three foxes gobbled up the chicken.  The three foxes are now always brave and never hungry.
And they all lived happily ever after, well the foxes did!

THE END.

Two Great Reads

Thank you Mrs. Finn for the two great books you gave me to read over the weekend.
The first was Stella Stands Alone by A. LaFaye. This is a historical fiction novel with a twist. What would have happened if a planter had freed all of his slaves before the Civil War and treated them as equal partners on the plantation? Stella's father did just that and you can read about what happened because he treated his "folks" with respect. Stella follows her father's beliefs and relies on her strong faith in her struggle to keep Oak Grove Plantation together. I'd give a 4 star rating.
Need a good laugh? The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt, follow Holling Hoodhood during his seventh grade year. Poor Holling thinks his teacher is out to get him, lets the class rats escape, is getting death threats from the 8th graders, wears yellow tights with feathers on the backside in a play, and has to read Shakespeare. These are just some of the adventures this 1967 seventh grader has to face during the year that Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy are killed and the Vietnam War is raging. There is a lot of dialogue and misadventures to keep the pages turning. Newbery Award Winner! I'd give it a 5 star rating.

ISLM Bookmark Project

October is International School Libraries Month!  In order to emphasize global awareness, Our Lady of Lourdes students will be making bookmarks in the upcoming weeks during the student's scheduled library time so that we may participate in a cool worldwide project.   The International School Library Month's Bookmark Project involves paring up with schools internationally and making homemade bookmarks (any style, shape etc. - we get to be creative!) that reflects International School Library Month's theme of School Libraries: The Big Picture.  We will exchange our bookmarks with another school somewhere in the world!  (I do not know where yet!) These bookmarks will be mailed to our matched school sometime in early October.

The Ranger's Apprentice Series....

This great series is written by an Australian author, John Flanagan. He began writing this series in an attempt to get his own son to read!

A medieval fantasy series which follows the adventures of Will, a small and lively 15 year old boy living in medieval times. Rejected for training as a warrior-knight, Will is apprenticed instead to the Ranger Corps – who are King’s eyes and ears throughout a mythical world and beyond. The Rangers scare Will initially. Some believe that the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. Can Will discover what their real purpose may be? Let the adventure begin....we already have Books 1-5.  Look for Book 6 to be added soon.

There is a really cool website too.  Check it out.

The Arrival

If you liked The Invention of Hugo Cabret..check out The Arrival.   This is a graphic novel at its best....

Tan captures the displacement and awe with which immigrants respond to their new surroundings in this wordless graphic novel. It depicts the journey of one man, threatened by dark shapes that cast shadows on his family's life, to a new country. The only writing is in an invented alphabet, which creates the sensation immigrants must feel when they encounter a strange new language and way of life. A wide variety of ethnicities is represented in Tan's hyper-realistic style, and the sense of warmth and caring for others, regardless of race, age, or background, is present on nearly every page. Young readers will be fascinated by the strange new world the artist creates, complete with floating elevators and unusual creatures, but may not realize the depth of meaning or understand what the man's journey symbolizes. More sophisticated readers, however, will grasp the sense of strangeness and find themselves participating in the man's experiences. They will linger over the details in the beautiful sepia pictures and will likely pick up the book to pore over it again and again.-Alana Abbott, James Blackstone Memorial Library
