The Arrival
If you liked The Invention of Hugo Cabret..check out The Arrival. This is a graphic novel at its best....
Tan captures the displacement and awe with which immigrants respond to their new surroundings in this wordless graphic novel. It depicts the journey of one man, threatened by dark shapes that cast shadows on his family's life, to a new country. The only writing is in an invented alphabet, which creates the sensation immigrants must feel when they encounter a strange new language and way of life. A wide variety of ethnicities is represented in Tan's hyper-realistic style, and the sense of warmth and caring for others, regardless of race, age, or background, is present on nearly every page. Young readers will be fascinated by the strange new world the artist creates, complete with floating elevators and unusual creatures, but may not realize the depth of meaning or understand what the man's journey symbolizes. More sophisticated readers, however, will grasp the sense of strangeness and find themselves participating in the man's experiences. They will linger over the details in the beautiful sepia pictures and will likely pick up the book to pore over it again and again.-Alana Abbott, James Blackstone Memorial Library

Posting or Commenting Directions
If your student is wanting to comment or post on the library blog independently you must first send Mrs. Finn an email requesting to add you as a blogger. Please include what the student would prefer their user name be (make sure the name is appropriate!) This allows me to add them as an acceptable blogger.
Otherwise, they can write their book reviews while in the library and Mrs. Finn will post their comments or reviews for them.
Thanks, Mrs. Finn

Read Penny from Heaven by Jennifer Holm. This is a very enjoyable book! Penny bounces between households, since her Dad had died, and she lived with her Mom and grandparents and visited her Dad's parents, aunts and uncles often. Humor and sadness both, but the story has a nice ending. Read it!!! It's a Newbery Medal Winner!

How to Take Care of Your Library Books
Happy Friday,
Students will be learning how to take care of their library books the next few weeks. Help us to reinforce their care at home to prevent damaged books needing to be replaced. Click on the title above for a great video to reinforce what we explain in the library and help your student to find a special place for your library materials at home.

Inkheart is exciting! I would read it if I were you. It's about a girl whose father can read people out of books, except when you read someone out...someone goes in. Meggie's (the girl) mother gets read into the book when the villains come out. I think you should also read Inkspell the sequel to Inkheart and Inkdeath the sequel to Inkspell.

Be sure to check out the new book "Chains" by Laurie Halse Anderson. Historical Fiction. Revolutionary War beginning. Characters: Ruth and Isabel (sisters) promised freedom on death of owner, but became property of the Locktons who were not kind. Isabel was a spy, giving info to her friend Curzon who has ties to the Patriots. Locktons were on the side of the Brtish, so Isabel had to be very careful. Isabel finally runs away, rescuing her friend, Curzon, from a prison. Sequel to this book is "Forge". I liked the suspense and the helping hands Isabel received from a few good epople. I liked her determination.

Welcome Back!
School is underway and we have lots of exciting things happening in the library again this year! Be sure to check out all the new reads we added to our collection over the summer!
We will spend the first few library classes going over the rules and procedures for using the library resources and computer pod. Grades 1-8 will be able to begin checking out materials with their first scheduled library class. Kindergarten will not begin checkout until mid-September.
See you around!
